Ghana Grid Company partners to boost internet in Ghana

Mobile network operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Ghana will have their internet capabilities boosted thanks to a fiber optic partnership signed recently between Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) and CSquared. The partnership consists of leasing excess fiber capacity to these operators.

CSquared said it would deliver customer and technical support, network security, and last-mile connectivity, thus ensuring a better, safer, faster customer experience.

GRIDCo’s operations involve the use of an Optical Ground Wire System (OPGW), which serves to protect the nation’s transmission system against lightning strikes. The OPGW can also be utilized as fiber for communication purposes.

“Every day, broadband is connecting the unconnected. From education to health care to economic opportunities, more people in Ghana continue to benefit from living in a fully digitized world,” CSquared Group CEO Lanre Kolade said.

GRIDCO CEO Jonathan Amoako-Baah said the partnership’s benefits include internet broadband access and affordability.

“Our efforts in this area tie in perfectly with the government’s digitization agenda. In an age where technology is dictating the pace of everything we do, no one should be left behind in harnessing its power and we are committed to helping enforce that.”

The government of Ghana said its commitment to achieving universal and affordable access to the internet by 2030 made infrastructure investment critical.
